IELTS (International exams for admission in foreign universities)

What is IELTS Exam?

The International English Language Test System (IELTS) is a standard English language test, designed for other foreign speakers to test their English language ability. Especially it is designed for candidates who want to study, work, and live in an English-speaking environment.

The IELTS certificate opens the door to international education and employment. This language assessment test is prepared by world-renowned experts in the evaluation of the English language in which people communicate easily.

IELTS exam is recognized globally and many international universities follow this test for enrollment of their foreign candidates.

Who manages IELTS?

IELTS is administered jointly by the Cambridge University ESOL exams (Cambridge ESOL), the British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia. IELTS is considered to be the highest international standard test for language assessment.

This IELTS exam is accepted by thousands of schools, colleges, universities, companies, immigration authorities, and professional organizations around the world. IELTS is a very effective and natural way to assess communication skills in English.

You can take IELT’s academic or general training. It is a standardized test, with a particular focus on verbal skills. Candidates are trained to listen, speak, read, and write during the exam.

IELTS Test Format

The IELTS test is divided into four sub-tests or modules: writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Candidates must appear in all four modules.

While all candidates appear in the same Listening and Speaking tests, they take different reading and writing tests, which depend on whether they have chosen the academic module or the general training module.

The duration of the IELTS exam is 2 hours 45 minutes. Sometimes IELTS speaking tests can be performed even a day or two later in some examination centers.

On test day, the four sub-tests or modules are taken in the mentioned-below sequence:

IELTS Listening Test Pattern

The IELTS Listening Test takes approximately 30 minutes. It consists of four sub-parts and is played on cassette, in increasing order of difficulty. Each sub-part can be a dialogue or a monologue.

The listening test is only played once, and the questions in each sub-part must be answered while listening, although students have time to recheck their answers.

IELTS Reading Test Pattern

The IELTS reading test has a duration of 60 minutes. Students must take an academic reading test or a general reading test. Both tests comprise three parts, and in both tests, the parts are arranged in increasing difficulty order.

IELTS Writing Test Pattern

The IELTS Writing test also has a duration of 60 minutes. Candidates can have a choice to take an academic sub-test or a general training sub-test. Candidates are required to perform two writing tasks, which depend on different writing styles. No choice is there for any topic of the question.

IELTS Speaking Test Pattern

The IELTS speaking test exam comprises an individual interview with a specially trained and expert examiner.

The interviews are recorded and consist of three different sections:

An introduction and an interview, along with individual turn where the candidate will have to speak for 1 to 2 minutes on a specific topic, and a two-way discussion thematically linked to the long individual turn. This interview will have a duration of approximately 12 to 14 minutes.

The overall IELTS score is calculated on a scale from 1 to 9 for each sub-test and the overall average is considered as the final score. After clearing the exam, the way to study abroad or work in the United Kingdom and in EU countries becomes easier.

TOEFL (International Exams For Admission In Foreign Universities)

Evaluate the importance of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with the consequence that, as proof of English proficiency, your results are accepted to obtain visas from some reputed countries.

The TOEFL exam contains verbal, written, study, and group discussion training to determine what words affect people on different topics.

TOEFL exam scores are accepted in the region of non-native English speakers, such as the United States and the Asia Pacific.

Compared to IELTS, TOEFL is a Computer Based Test (CBT), which also lists a written part of the candidate’s style. The individual sub-part has 30 points while listening, reading, speaking, and writing in English has 120 points.

GRE (International Exam For Business Schools In The US And Canada)

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is an international exam used to access several graduate schools or business schools in English-speaking countries, particularly in the United States and Canada.

Candidates from more than one million universities in almost 160 countries take the GRE exams in 700 different exam centers.

Those who are interested in obtaining a master’s or postgraduate degree, a specialized master’s degree course, a Master of Science (MS), MBA, MEM, or a doctorate (Ph.D.) can take this test.

In addition to the revised GRE exam, there are seven GRE essay tests, which evaluate candidates in their own field. The GRE exam is managed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

It is the only exam that allows you to enroll in the MS, MBA, or Ph.D. programs of a foreign university. The scope of this exam is not limited to a particular region or to a particular country or place, unlike GMAT, IELTS, and TOEFL.

If you consider the GRE exam offers a better chance of choosing the required study with a standard score, then your thinking is correct.

GMAT (International Exams For MBA Admission In Foreign Universities)

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is very similar to the GRE in its structure and nature, but as the name implies, this test is intended for candidates who wish to study MBA (Master of Business Administration) programs in foreign universities.

The GRE exam is scored on a scale of 800 points, in which an average of 800 points of verbal and quantitative sections are taken to evaluate the performance of the candidate.

We cannot particularly decide whether a GMAT score is good or bad unless there is a significant reduction in candidate preparation.

Foreign Universities and Schools accept different GRE scores from candidates to enter their MBA program. TOEFL and IELTS assess the oral skills of the candidates.

However, these two exams do not give a clear idea of the academic and intellectual abilities of a candidate. Unless a candidate acquires a GRE or GMAT score, his or her admission to foreign universities is not confirmed.
