The “chances are high” that the human remains found in a Florida park on Wednesday belonged to Brian Laundrie, a family representative said Wednesday evening.

Laundrie’s family attorney Steven Bertolino made the shocking statement in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, but added, “We will wait for forensic results to confirm it.”

A Laundrie backpack and notebook were discovered in the park on Wednesday, the same day Laundrie’s parents, Chris and Roberta, showed up to help find their fleeing son.

Bertolino told Cuomo the finds were made near a bridge connecting the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park and the adjacent Carlton Reservation.

“This is the same area of the park that we initially reported to the police. I think it was September 17 when Brian would likely be in that particular area of the reserve,” the attorney said.

“It was pretty close to the entrance,” the lawyer said, “about 30 minutes inside”.

Parents filed a missing person report on 17th September after Brian failed to return home after a trip to the park.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the FBI said the area where the remains and items were found “was underwater until recently.”

Brian, 23, has been the target of massive police and FBI prosecutions since his disappearance and has been called a “person of interest” in the murder of his 22-year-old girlfriend Gabby Petito.

Petito’s remains were found in a Wyoming park on September 19 and his death was later declared murder by strangulation.

Laundrie’s parents left their North Port home at around 7:15 am Wednesday to go to the park.

Bertolino told Cuomo he contacted North Port Police on Tuesday evening to let them know the parents were to help with the search the next day.

Laundries later discovered a white bag and another item after walking through a bush.

Fox News reported that they could be seen putting the article in their pocket and handing it to an officer.

The couple could be seen walking by and receiving phone calls before joining the officer who patted Chris on the shoulder.

Bertolino said Wednesday evening that Brian’s parents were ‘heartbroken’ by the events of Wednesday.
