Christopher Thomas Vaughan, a defendant who was shot after attempting to steal a sheriff’s gun in a Person County courtroom, has died, the SBI confirmed Friday morning.
The shooting took place at the Person County Courthouse in Roxboro on Thursday, as per the statement from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

What Was The Incident?
Vaughan was tried for false imprisonment after being charged with trying to get a woman out of a Walmart, Louisburg attorney Boyd Sturges told News & Observer.
After a guilty verdict, Sturges said, Vaughan threw down a chair and ran to the bench, where, as per The News & Observer, two MPs overpowered him.
Vaughan tried to seize the gun from a sheriff, the SBI said.
Vaughan was shot and killed by a Roxboro police officer, as per the information shared with the SBI by local authorities.
Vaughan was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he died, as per the SBI statement.
The sheriff had a cut on his head and a scratch on his neck, while the officer had a broken hand, the SBI said. They were treated at medical facilities and released.

Since then, they have both been discharged from the hospital.
The names of the agents are not yet known.
The SBI is investigating the shooting at the request of the Person County Sheriff’s Office, the Roxboro Police Department, and the District Attorney’s Office.
