Walter Smith Dies Aged 73

Smith died at the age of 73; Smith has enjoyed great success in two appearances for Rangers and has coached Scotland and Everton.

His death comes the same year the Rangers won their first Scottish Premiership title since Smith’s last season in 2011.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our former club manager, president, and legend Walter Smith,” the club said.

His Professional Career

Smith was appointed by the Rangers in April 1991 after the departure of Graeme Souness, of whom he had been the assistant, for Liverpool.

Smith went on to set seven of the Rangers’ records for nine straight titles. Rangers were one of the most important clubs in Europe at the time. Smith started Paul Gascoigne’s career after passing midfielder with Lazio.

Smith left Ibrox in 1998 and spent four years at Everton. He has rejuvenated the Scottish national team since 2004 before being persuaded to return to Ibrox three years later.

Smith led Rangers to the 2008 Uefa Cup final, where he received eight national awards before stepping down from management in 2011.

His character and leadership were second to none and everyone he worked with during his two terms as a first-team coach will be remembered by him.”
