On Friday, the United States expressed apprehension regarding the constraints imposed during Pakistan’s electoral proceedings and voiced concerns about allegations of electoral manipulation.

Even as the vote tallying continued, candidates aligned with imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan seemed to be leading the pack. Despite facing a crackdown, Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), exceeded expectations.

Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, stressed the significance of promptly obtaining transparent election outcomes that authentically mirror the Pakistani people’s will. He echoed the worries expressed by reputable international and local election monitors regarding restrictions on freedom of expression, association, and assembly during the electoral process.

Miller also denounced instances of electoral violence and called for thorough investigations into claims of interference and fraud.

Nevertheless, he underscored the Biden administration’s readiness to collaborate with the forthcoming Pakistani government, irrespective of its political affiliation, to further mutual interests such as trade, investment, and security cooperation.
