US President Tightens Telecom Restrictions For Huawei And ZTE

When Joe Biden became the new president of the United States, the noose around Huawei had to be loosened. The new president had promised to review the status of the Huawei ban with his government, but there was absolutely no attempt to ease the sanctions.

Instead, in a disappointing twist, the US President signed a new law that will further strengthen the ability of Chinese companies to obtain new equipment licenses from US regulators.

Safe Equipment and was approved by the US House of Representatives in September. The United States Senate also passed this law in October.

Here’s a quick rundown of what the Safe Equipment Act is:

With the passage of the new law, the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will no longer review or approve permit applications for devices marked as an unacceptable risk to national security. As early as March this year, the FCC had identified five Chinese companies (Huawei, ZTE, Hytera Communications Corp, Hangzhou Hikvision and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co, a manufacturer of photographic equipment) as a threat to national security.

As a result of this law, equipment licenses and permits will be withdrawn from any Chinese company that is considered a threat to the national security of the United States.

In short, no Chinese company will be able to send its own communications equipment to the United States.
