Family Background

Her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, played a vital role in the movement to separate Bangladesh from Pakistan and became the first President of Bangladesh. While studying at the University of Dhaka in the 1960s, Sheikh Hasina worked as her father’s political liaison while he was imprisoned.

In a tragic turn of events on August 15, 1975, her father, mother, and three brothers were murdered in their home by military officers, leading her into six years of lonely exile.

Her most significant achievement was the signing of the ‘Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord’ in December 1997, ending decades of violence between the government and the tribes of the region.
