Romanian PM Florin Citu survived a vote of confidence by the opposition on Tuesday, accusing the pro-EU government of “leading the country into the abyss”.

A total of 201 MPs backed the motion, a far cry from the 234 it would take to overthrow the government.

The Social Democrats (PSD), supported by the nationalist party AUR, accused the government of impoverishing the Romanians by “freezing wages and pensions” and wasting borrowed money on world markets.

Former banker Citu denied the allegations, saying his coalition of liberals and the reformist USR-Plus party elected in December wanted to modernize the country.

“We have made a record amount available for public investment,” he told Parliament and put the sum at 5.5 percent of the gross domestic product.
