Career Highlights

Akyol made his debut as a writer with a short story titled Zero Impact, featured in the WTF Bundle titled Growing up after 9/11. This story revolves around the experiences of young people coming of age in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York.

His first novel, Eus, was published in October 2012 by the Prometeo publishing house. The book tells the story of a Turkish-Dutch boy from a guest worker family who strives to break free from his cultural background. It is widely considered a semi-autobiographical work. Eus garnered significant attention in the Dutch media, with 10,000 copies sold within a week of its release. Just a month after its publication, the film rights were acquired by Eyeworks.

Akyol transitioned into a role as an opinion maker on television following the success of his book. He frequently appeared on television programs, including The World Goes On and Peacock.

In May 2014, he co-authored a book of quotes with Twitter sensation @Dublanqebogarde, titled Hey Referee, Surely You Have Nothing to Say at Home? This book humorously explores the bizarre norms of behavior in football.

Akyol’s first children’s book, Let’s Not Celebrate, was released in the fall of 2014. The story revolves around a child’s quest for help for his sick brother on Christmas Eve, offering a poignant life lesson. This book had a limited edition release.

His second novel, Turis, centers on a protagonist searching for his father’s supposed double life to drive his parents apart. While it was presented as literary fiction, it’s believed to mirror aspects of the author’s real life.

In 2017, Akyol created a television documentary series titled The Cousins of Eus, which aired on NPO2 and VRT. In the series, he travels to Turkey with relatives who reside there, serving as his primary guides.

Akyol hosted the BNNVARA program Our Man in Deventer in December 2017. This radio show featured weekly interviews with guests in his home in Deventer, broadcast live on Radio NPO 1. The program consisted of five episodes.

Personal Life and Achievements

Akyol is married to Anna van den Breemer. His family background is a blend of atheism, with his father sharing the same belief, and Islam, as practiced by his mother. He is known for his critical stance on Islam and Turkish nationalism, a perspective that is not always well-received by all quarters.
