Instagram is Discontinuing The Swipe-Up Feature With Link Sticker

As of 30th August, Instagram will no longer use the swipe feature that allows users to visit external links by swiping, which has been confirmed by the company.

As per the Instagram, the current functionality will be replaced with link stickers. These are tactile stickers that direct the user to external links.

The company announced that it is discontinuing swiping, a feature with its own GIF library, to give users more freedom in story creation and more creative control, as stickers can be personalized as they go that they slip.

This new update is based on testing the company started this summer. In June, Instagram started testing these link stickers.

Provided to users with swipe permission (users must have at least 10,000 subscribers to be able to swipe up).

During the testing period, Vishal Shah, former product manager at Instagram, told media that the stickers were more appropriate given current user usage.

He also said “the goal is to redistribute the stickers”.

Besides the obvious difference in gestures, the basic difference between the two features is that viewers can reply to articles with a link tag but cannot cross out stories.
