Twitter Releases New Functionality To Report Disinformation

Twitter announced a new feature on Tuesday that will allow users to identify content that may contain misinformation, an issue that has only worsened during the pandemic.

“We’re testing a feature that allows you to flag tweets that look deceptive as you see them,” Twitter said from its security account.

Some users in the United States, South Korea, and Australia may see a button that clicked the “Report Tweet” button on Tuesday and said it was ‘misleading’.

Users can then be more specific and alert that the misleading tweet may contain erroneous ‘health’, ‘politics’ or ‘other’ information.

“We’re evaluating if this is an effective approach, so let’s start small,” Twitter said.

“We may not take action and respond to all reports of the experience, but your input will help us identify trends so that we can improve the speed and reach of our wider disinformation work.”

Like Facebook and YouTube, Twitter is often criticized by critics for not doing enough to combat the spread of disinformation.

However, lacking the resources of its Silicon Valley counterparts, the platform often relies on experimental tactics rather than hiring armies of moderators.

When Twitter tightened its fraudulent guidelines during the Covid-19 pandemic and the US presidential race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, these tactics multiplied.

For example, in March, Twitter began banning users who received five warnings about the dissemination of false vaccine information.
