Apple’s M2 Chip Will Be A Small Upgrade From M1, Says Report

Apple broke with Intel when it released its in-house M1 chipset, which proved to be much faster and more efficient than Intel’s core offerings. But sadly, the M2 may not be that big of an update this year, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

As per the report, the SoC M2 should be redesigned with better proportions, but its performance should only improve slightly. The M2 would have an 8-core processor like the M1, but maybe TSMC’s 5 nm process will bring some efficiency gains.

The M1 consumes 7W in idle, but up to 39 W at full load. The M2 could use less power for the same tasks. Some other reports have indicated that it will have a 10-core GPU, which will be an upgrade from the 8-core M1.

The M2 is expected to appear in the MacBook Air 2022, which will receive a display upgrade with mini-LED panels. There will also be a notch in the display, a Thunderbolt 4 port, and a MagSafe connection.

Since the M2 chip is unlikely to hit the market until the second half of 2022, we can predict that the MacBook Air won’t hit the market until the third quarter of this year. This was confirmed by an earlier report that said the laptop would begin mass production during this period.
