Apple’s iPhone 14 will be announced shortly with some big changes that should also apply to future models.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed in his latest newsletter that the iPhone 14 series will not include a notch for the sensors. Instead, the design of the iPhone will include a pill-shaped cutout across the top of the screen.

Apple previously said the notch is an integral part of the housing for the sensors on the Face ID and selfie cameras.

Prior to Gurman’s latest reports, Korean publication The Elec claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will have a hole in the screen instead of the notch.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said the model will include perforated cuts. This has now been confirmed by various reports.

The notch was first introduced in 2017 with the iPhone X and has not changed to this day. The notch encompasses the TrueDepth camera suite, which includes an infrared camera, a projector, a front camera, and a spot projector.

Reports have also shown that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will include the notch as a design feature. However, the Pro models will be equipped with a pickup-shaped recess for the sensors.

There are rumors that Apple could use a laser-based time-of-flight architecture for Face ID. Others say the company will offer a one-piece lens design that will help reduce the size of the front camera module. So far, however, these have only been rumors, without any analysts claiming to do so.
