Veterans Day is the time Americans set aside to thank those who have served in the US military.

Veterans Day 2021 is Thursday, 11th November.

Veterans Day History

The day dates back to the end of World War I, when on 11th November 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th month, an armistice between the Allied Nations went into effect under the leadership of the United States and Germany.

In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed 11th November as the first day of commemoration of Armistice Day.

Why Do We Celebrate Veterans Day?

Almost 30 years later, after American soldiers served in World War II and in Korea, Congress voted to change the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in honor of all military personnel.

The day is usually marked with parades and ceremonies honoring veterans.

As per the United States Census, there are currently more than 17.4 million veterans in the United States.

What Is Open And What Is Closed On Veterans Day 2021?

  • Federal Offices – Closed. Veterans Day is a federal holiday
  • State offices – closed
  • District and city offices: almost all closed
  • Banks – Closed
  • US Post Office: Closed. The post doesn’t work on Thursday.
  • Schools: most are closed.
  • Garbage Collection: Most will be delayed. Check with your provider.
  • Financial Markets: The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are open.
  • Restaurant and shops: most are open.
  • Walmart: open during regular opening hours
  • Goal: regular opening hours
  • ABC Stores – Open
