WhatsApp is Finally Getting A More Powerful Native Windows App

WhatsApp has always been available on desktop computers, but only as a web app instead of a native Windows app. That’s finally changing today, as WhatsApp just released a dedicated Windows-only app.

The native app no longer uses the legacy web backend. It’s similar to the WhatsApp desktop app currently available, but runs faster, uses fewer fonts, and should load faster too. It works similar to WhatsApp Desktop, so you can continue your chats and calls even when your phone is offline.

WhatsApp also plans to release a native app for MacBooks, but it’s still in development. It is currently in closed beta testing and will be released for macOS as a “universal app”, meaning it will be based on the iPhone version of WhatsApp and will run natively on Apple-based MacBooks.

According to 9to5Mac, the native macOS app should be significantly faster than the current version.

Regardless of the platform, however, you’ll need to link the desktop app to your phone. Once the app is connected to your phone, you can send messages and make calls protected by end-to-end encryption.

You can use WhatsApp Desktop even when your phone is offline and you can link up to 4 devices to one WhatsApp account, but the linked devices will be automatically disconnected if you don’t use your phone within 14 days.

The new WhatsApp desktop app is available for download from the Windows Store. Visit the WhatsApp FAQ page for more information.
