Wanda Emilia Vázquez Garced is a Puerto Rican politician and attorney who served as Governor of Puerto Rico from 2019 to 2021. Prior to her tenure as governor, she was the 19th Attorney General from 2017 to 2019. A member of the New Progressive Party and the Republican Party of Puerto Rico, Vázquez is the second female governor in Puerto Rico’s history, after Sila María Calderón.

In mid-May, Vázquez’s attorney told reporters he and his client are preparing for possible indictments because the then-ex-governor has denied any wrongdoing: “I can tell the people of Puerto Rico that I have committed no crime that.” I have not committed any illegal or inappropriate behavior as I have always said.
Vázquez was the second woman to serve as governor of Puerto Rico and the first former governor to face federal indictment. Former governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá was charged with campaign finance violations during his tenure and was found not guilty in 2009. He was the first Puerto Rico governor to be charged with a crime in recent history.
Vázquez took over as governor in August 2019 after former governor Ricardo Rosselló resigned following massive protests. He served until 2021 after losing the pro-state New Progressive Party primary to incumbent Governor Pedro Pierluisi.
Pierluisi commented on the arrest in a statement also posted on Twitter on Thursday. “Today we see once again that nobody is above the law in Puerto Rico,” he said in both. He added that his government had “zero tolerance for corruption”.
