Two people were hospitalized for the shooting at Heritage High School with injuries “not considered life-threatening,” Virginia police said.

Police tweeted via verified agencies that the investigation was ongoing.

As per the police tweet, the students were evacuated and sent to the campus tennis court.

Kelly T. King, public relations manager for Newport News Police, was unable to provide details of the potential suspects.

In a tweet Monday afternoon, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said he was “in close contact with first responders.”

He advised people to avoid the area and follow instructions from law enforcement.

What Police Have Investigated Up Till Now?

Police said reports of active shooters at other schools in the city were false.

“We are closely following the terrible reports of a shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News,” US Senator Mark Warner said on Twitter.

“We pray for the health and safety of everyone involved while we wait to find out more.”

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said he and his team were in close contact with first responders.

Virginia representative Bobby Scott said on Twitter that his staff was monitoring the situation.

As per the Newport News Public Schools, approximately 1,300 students attend Heritage High School.

The students returned to class on September 8 and were in their second full week of school.

Newport News is located at the southeastern tip of the Virginia Peninsula, north of Norfolk.

Several other schools in the United States have also seen shootings in school buildings since the return to face-to-face learning this year.

Authorities arrested the suspected gunman on Monday afternoon, Drew said.

Steve Drew said Monday afternoon that authorities had arrested the suspected gunman who had previously opened fire at Heritage High School in Newport News.

“The person is on remand,” Drew said, paying tribute to the “callers, the parents who call our students here” and “the cooperation we have” in making the arrest.

The investigation is continuing.
