Eduardo Matute is a New Jersey police officer who snatched a one-month-old baby that a man threw from a balcony on the second floor of a building, authorities said Saturday.
The newborn, who was not identified, was not physically injured, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said.
In an Instagram post, Fulop thanked Officer Eduardo Matute and posted a photo of him holding the baby.

New Jersey Police Officer Catches Baby Dropped From Balcony
The incident began Saturday morning in Jersey City with a report that an unidentified man ‘hung’ the newborn on a balcony, a Jersey City spokesman told NJ Advance Media.
Officers negotiated with the man and established a perimeter, Fulop said.
Authorities said the man was arrested after dumping the baby, NJ Advance Media reported.
It was not immediately clear what charges he faced. No further details were known.
“Congratulations to the JCPD and all the officials involved for his heroism and for putting an end to this dangerous situation,” the Hudson County district attorney said in a statement.
What Police Have Investigated Up Till Now?
Police did not report any motive for the near tragedy other than a comment about the man suffering from mental illness.
“Officers at the scene reacted quickly and were able to catch the baby. Fortunately, the baby was not physically injured,” says the caption.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suárez also thanked the officials involved on Twitter “for their heroism and for putting an end to this dangerous situation.”
