The article reports that Mike Gallagher, the chairman of the U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, is leading a delegation of American lawmakers to Taiwan on February 21st.

Gallagher, known for his criticism of China, has visited Taiwan previously and advocates for a firm stance against Beijing. This visit is seen as part of ongoing congressional engagement with Taiwan rather than a sudden provocation.

The delegation’s itinerary includes meetings with Taiwanese Vice-President William Lai Ching-te and Han Kuo-yu, the newly elected parliamentary speaker from the Kuomintang party, which has a more conciliatory approach toward Beijing.

While Taiwan’s presidential office hasn’t confirmed the visit, customary warm receptions for American congressmen visiting Taiwan suggest it will proceed as scheduled.

Despite the lack of formal recognition of Taiwan’s sovereignty by most countries, there’s broad international consensus against any forced change to the status quo, with the U.S. being Taiwan’s primary arms supplier and informal ally.

Gallagher’s visit is viewed as reaffirming this support, especially given his efforts to bolster Taiwan’s defense capabilities. Historically, Beijing has strongly reacted to such visits, but analysts believe China may express discontent without escalating militarily, unlike the response to Nancy Pelosi’s visit in August 2022.
