Ahead of the 2024 US presidential election, TikTok has unveiled additional details about its strategies to combat disinformation. Similar to its counterparts in the social media landscape, the company’s 2024 initiatives closely mirror its previous efforts, as reported by Engadget.

TikTok Bolsters Efforts to Curb Misinformation and Fake Content in Run-up to Elections

One key feature is the introduction of its in-app election guide, designed to direct users to voting-related resources such as voter registration forms and instructions for mail-in voting. Although the election guide shares similarities with those of past years, the noteworthy difference is that TikTok is releasing it well in advance compared to previous elections.

Notably, resources for the 2020 and 2022 elections were made available much closer to the respective contests, whereas this year’s release coincides with the commencement of the presidential primary.

TikTok’s approach to handling misleading content has largely remained consistent from 2022 to 2024. The company continues to reject political ads, even if presented as producer-branded content. Additionally, TikTok maintains its collaboration with fact-checking organizations to assess content for recommendation or flagging as “unverified.”

In a noteworthy move, TikTok has announced plans to “expand media literacy resources to these labels” later in the year. While the specifics of this expansion remain unclear, it is anticipated that this enhancement will provide users with more useful information when encountering alerts related to misleading content.
