The National Airline Of The UAE Denies Boarding To Pakistani Transgender People

Two Pakistani transgender activists posing as women were denied boarding by a major UAE airline, flydubai. They would have the gender “x” on their ID cards. The gender identity “x” is currently being debated in the Pakistani Parliament over various provisions deemed un-Islamic.

Flydubai has reportedly canceled Genre Interactive Alliance (GIA) Shahzadi Rai and Zehra tickets for their Karachi-Kathmandu flight via the United Arab Emirates.

Shahzadi later shared a video on social media complaining about the incident at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. Many other members of the transgender community joined Shahzadi and Zehra in starting a social media trend against the airline, which has yet to make an official statement.

The ‘X’ Gender Controversy in Pakistan

It is extremely important to note that Pakistan’s Transgender Law of 2018 allows people to choose their gender identity based on perception rather than the biological requirements needed to define gender.

For example, if a biological male “feels” that he is female, he can change his gender to female (gender x) on national identity documents based on his feelings, and vice versa, despite having male genitalia.

This question has fueled a heated debate between the religious and liberal sections of society. One called for the law to be changed or repealed as contrary to Islam, and the other group justified this as progressive. The issue is currently being discussed and both parties are introducing various amendments in Parliament.

Most of the time in Pakistan the term “intersex” is confused with “transgender”. Intersex refers to a condition in which a person is born with physical characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. This can include variations in chromosomes, hormones, and genitals.
