Tamar Herman is a teacher at Seth Boyden Elementary School in Maplewood, NJ, who was accused on social media of forcibly removing a 7-year-old boy’s hijab in front of her classroom.
Olympic athlete Ibtihaj Muhammad identified the teacher in an Instagram post. The school district has not verified the identity of the teacher.
Cassandra Wyatt, the mother of second grader Sumayyah Wyatt, told ABC 7 New York that she no longer wants to wear her headscarf to school.

Teacher At Seth Boyden Elementary Accused Of Ripping Hijab Off Student
An attorney for the Wyatt family told ABC 7 New York that the girl wears her hijab every day at school, but she said the teacher forcibly removed it on 6th October, 2021.
“In the end, the teacher manages to remove the hijab from her head, followed by a strange statement that says, ‘Your hair is beautiful,'” the lawyer told the news channel.
“It is incredibly unsettling. It is very, very symbolic of contempt for her religion and certainly something that has influenced my clients in general.”
Cassandra Wyatt told the point of sale that she wanted the teacher to face the consequences.
“She must have known she was a hijab,” she told ABC 7. “She has to pay for it. I want her to apologize to my daughter and then my daughter will feel better …”
Organizations and citizens ask that the teacher be fired. The New Jersey office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations wrote on Twitter, “calling for the teacher’s immediate dismissal.”
What Was The School’s Statement?
The South Orange & Maplewood School District issued a statement on Friday, 8th October, 2021 saying they are investigating the allegations and are following their existing guidelines.
“We continue to advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in all of our schools, including regular anti-bias and racism training for all educators in the district,” the statement said in part.
“We have put words into action, as evidenced by our adoption of a deliberate integration plan, the creation of an assistant superintendent with a focus on access and equal opportunity, and our work with outside experts on equal opportunity.”
Statement From Cassandra Wyatt
Wyatt told WABC-TV that the alleged incident sparked difficult conversations with her second-degree daughter of hers.
Sumayyah Wyatt told her mother that she no longer wanted to cover her head, Cassandra Wyatt told the news agency.
“I have to go and take her to another world that she was trying to protect her from,” Wyatt told the news network.
Wyatt said in the interview that she taught her daughter that her helmet was her protection.
“Now she asked me, ‘Well, if this is my protection, my teacher has taken it from me. How can you explain it to her son?” She said.
Statement From Olympic Champion Ibtihaj Muhammad
Mohammed posted allegations on Instagram on 7th October, 2021, naming the teacher Tamar Herman and describing the teacher’s alleged acts as abuse.
Mohammed wrote:
Yesterday, Tamar Herman, a teacher at Seth Boyden Elementary School in Maplewood, NJ, forcibly removed a second-grade boy’s hijab. The young student resisted trying to hold her hijab, but the teacher took it off and exposed her hair in class. Herman told the student that her hair was beautiful and that she no longer had to wear the hijab to school. Imagine that you were a child and that you had undressed in front of your classmates. Imagine the humiliation and trauma this experience caused you. It is abuse. Schools should be a safe haven where all of our children, regardless of their beliefs, feel safe, welcome, and protected. We cannot move towards a post-racial America until we have eradicated the racism and intolerance that still exist in all strata of our society. By protecting Muslim girls who wear the hijab, we are protecting the right of each of us to choose how we dress.
