Maria Ambrocio, a New Jersey nurse who works with cancer patients, died after falling on a sidewalk suspected of two robberies by a runaway homeless man near Times Square in the crime-ridden city in less than two hours.
Ambrocio, a Bayonne oncology nurse preparing to see her family for the first time since the pandemic began, was confirmed dead Saturday night after fighting for her life at Bellevue Hospital.

A New Jersey nurse who works with cancer patients is fighting for her life after a runaway homeless man who was suspected of two robberies in less than two hours near Times Square in the crime-stricken city took her to the sidewalk.
Ambrocio was walking through Times Square on Friday afternoon. She had just visited the Filipino Consulate in Midtown Manhattan and was returning home after lunch.
Ambrocio was driving through Crossroads of the World after stopping at the Philippine Consulate in Midtown when Jermaine Foster ran them over while allegedly escaping a crime scene.
Police said Foster, 26, stole a 29-year-old woman’s phone near West 41st Street and Broadway. According to the New York Post, Foster shot and killed Ambrocio, who sustained a head injury while on the run.
Tributes Paid in Honor of Maria Ambrocio
A nurse who worked with Ambrocio, Emilia Cruz, 70, said she left with her when Foster knocked her down.
“There were a lot of people there and we tried to maneuver,” said Cruz.
“I heard a loud bang like something was hitting the concrete and it was loud so I thought, ‘Wow, oh my god. What is it?’ And I looked down and saw her blouse, I didn’t see her face and I said, “Oh my god, Ning,” I’ll call her Ning,” Cruz said.
“I said, ‘Ning, what happened? Wake up, “and she was out,” he added.
“She was already passed out. She is not answering me. I keep looking for them. It foams at the mouth. And I said, ‘Call 911’.”
Cruz explained that Ambrocio is married, has stepchildren, and loves music, travel, and, most importantly, helping people.
“She’s like a sister to me, a younger sister. She’s a good nurse, an excellent nurse,” said Cruz.
Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis posted a Facebook post last Saturday calling on residents to pray for Ambrocio, calling his attack an “unprovoked attack by a deranged man”.
