Samuel Westmoreland, an attacking lineman for the MSU Bulldogs football team and an industrial engineering student, has died, the school said Wednesday.
Westmoreland was a football freshman in the state of Mississippi at the time of his death. After a solid career at Tupelo High School in Tupelo, Mississippi, he joined the team as an offensive lineman.

In a statement, the university said it was “working with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, the Oktibbeha County Medical Examiner, the MSU Division of Student Affairs, and the MSU Athletic Division to establish the facts of this incident.”
Tributes Paid in Honor Of Sam Westmoreland
MSU head coach Mike Leach paid tribute to the athlete on Twitter.
“The Mississippi State Athletics family is heartbroken at the sudden death of Sam Westmoreland,” he wrote.
“Sam was a beloved son, brother, and teammate and a wonderful young man with a boundless future,” continued Coach Leach. “All who knew and loved him will always remember him and miss him deeply.”
Westmoreland was just two days short of her 19th birthday when she died suddenly. In an update provided by TMZ Sports, the Oktibbeha County Coroner’s Office said a foul play for the Mississippi football player was not considered a death angle.
At the time of this writing, the cause of death for one of the Mississippi state members was not yet known.
Mississippi State football head Mike Leach released an emotional message following the news of Westmoreland’s death saying so.
“He will always be remembered and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him,” Leach said of Westmoreland. “Our top priority is to support the Westmoreland family and our student-athletes during this challenging time.”

The university said the incident is still under investigation and is working with authorities including the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, the Coroner’s Office, and MSU’s Athletic Department.
Ahead of Alabama’s game against No. 24 Mississippi State, Nick Saban took time out to comment on the death of Sam Westmoreland, the Bulldogs’ first offensive lineman. The Bulldog’s offensive lineman was just 18 years old.
Truly a tragedy at such a young age. The school has not yet announced a cause of death as the investigation into the companion’s untimely death is ongoing.
