Public Prepare Themselves For Phone Calls Loadshedding

Following the federal government’s increase in telecom tariffs, telecom companies are warning the public to expect regular outages on “phone calls” across the country, similar to blackouts.

The news comes after a recent hearing by the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, where members of the telecom industry expressed serious reservations about the tax hike.

During the conference, telecom officials said the federal government will increase the input tax on imported fiber optic cable by 15% and raise the tax by 20%.

They said telecom companies are already facing a number of problems and rising taxes on fiber optic cable would increase the strain on the industry.

Telecom operator officials have claimed that fiber optic cables are used in only 10% of towers across the country and that Pakistan will take on the lag in the global race for connectivity until the government lowers taxes on fiber optic cables.

They called on the committee to propose to the government to lower import tariffs on fiber optic cable to 8%. The telecom companies have been assured that the committee will forward their proposals to the government.
