PSL 8 Captain List: PSL 2023 Teams Captains

PSL Captains 2023 – In the upcoming eighth season, which starts tomorrow in Multan, the Pakistan Super League will continue its tradition of promoting local captains.

The only three foreign cricketers to have captained at least 10 PSL games historically are former West India captain Daren Sammy (Peshawar Zalmi), former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum (Lahore Qalandars), and former Sri Lankan captain Lanka Kumar Sangakkara ( Karachi Kings).

All other PSL championships apart from those won by these three former cricketers are mostly owned by Pakistani players. Readers should be aware that while former South African all-rounder Jean-Paul Duminy led Islamabad United to victory in the tournament’s third season, it did so in only a few games (both knockout games).

This competition is one of the few T20 leagues that has not allowed a single team to win consecutive championships, as only one team has won the PSL twice while all others have done so once each.

Lahore Qalandars – Shaheen Shah Afridi

In PSL 2022, Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi took the reins for Lahore Qalandars. After helping them win their first championship, Afridi also made a significant contribution as a bowler, winning 20 wickets in 13 games to become the season’s top wicket-taker.

Multan Sultans – Mohammad Rizwan

Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s vice-captain in the Test and ODI series, missed out on becoming the first captain to win back-to-back PSL championships last year. Rizwan led the Multan Sultans to the finals last season after guiding them to victory in 2021.

In his 24 games as captain, Rizwan won 17, lost 7, and was undeterred by the added responsibilities of a batsman. He has 1,046 carries at an average of 55.05.

Peshawar Zalmi-Babar Azam

It is quite unexpected that Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam has guided his team to just 11 PSL games in three seasons, let alone winning the league.

Azam played with Pakistani Imad Wasim for the Karachi Kings. He also has a dismal record as PSL captain, having guided the team to just one win. Azam, who will play for Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 8, is reportedly looking for a change in captaincy.

Karachi Kings – Imad Wasim

Despite the fact that he has not played for Pakistan since the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, Wasim ranks second among the cricketers to have captained the most PSL matches and was again awarded the captaincy in Kings.

Wasim, 34, who has captained 41 PSL games in four seasons, is keen to make his mark as a player and captain to fuel the country’s comeback.

Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is well ahead of any other captains in the competition and is the only cricketer to lead the PSL in its inaugural season. Ahmed, 35, has an outstanding record as a leader, leading the Quetta Gladiators to 36 wins in 72 games over the years.

Islamabad United – Shadab Khan

Shadab Khan, the vice-captain of the Pakistan T20I team, has become a successful PSL captain but has yet to win a championship. In four seasons, Islamabad United has won 17 games and lost 15.

Khan is one of the few cricketers who has prevented his leadership from influencing his personal success. In this scenario, the player himself becomes a truly deadly all-rounder.
