PMDC Notifies A Good News For International Students

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has granted special amnesty to Pakistani students studying in Afghanistan whose education has been banned by the Taliban government, and to students in Ukraine whose studies have been suspended due to the ongoing war.

To address this situation, a National Equivalence Assessment (NEB) was conducted at Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) as per a resolution of the newly elected council. A total of 370 candidates took the exam out of the 512 candidates scheduled for the exam.

During 2023, many Pakistani female students studying medicine in Afghanistan organized protests and demanded admission to medical schools in Pakistan, as the Taliban had banned teaching women in higher professions.

However, the former Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) did not provide assistance to these students as many of them failed the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) and did not register in Afghanistan without obtaining permission or informing the PMC.

PMDC has decided to offer these students the opportunity to take the exam. Likewise, many students, both men, and women, have returned from Ukraine due to the ongoing war and have also applied for admission to educational institutions in Pakistan.

There were also students who had returned from other countries.

In a statement released on Thursday, the PMDC mentioned that all necessary arrangements had been made before the exam, which had received positive feedback from students. Of the originally planned 512 candidates, 370 candidates took part in the examination. After a thorough review and analysis of all documents, the RMU compiled and edited the results, which were then uploaded to the PMDC website.

PMDC Chairman Dr. Rizwan Taj said the council granted special amnesty to Pakistani female students studying in Afghanistan and people affected by the war in Ukraine. He announced that the NEB will be organized twice a year to assess the knowledge, clinical skills and professional qualities of students who have partially completed their medical and dental courses at foreign institutions and are transferring to or being admitted to medical or dental schools want in Pakistan.

Dr. Taj stressed the Council’s commitment to maintaining high standards throughout Pakistan and aligning with international standards. Accreditation with the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is a top priority and efforts to achieve this are progressing rapidly. All universities have been directed to set up a research cell and quality control department to meet WFME accreditation criteria.

The PMDC’s decision to grant amnesty and lead the NEB reflects its commitment to furthering the educational aspirations of Pakistani students who are facing challenges abroad due to political circumstances and conflicts.
