Oman Allows Nationals To Marry Foreigners Without Permission

The Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik, has introduced new laws allowing Omani citizens to marry foreigners without obtaining permission from the Ministry of the Interior (MoI). The announcement was made via a royal decree released earlier this week.

The Royal Decree consists of seven articles, Article (1) being the one that repeals the previous law and all decisions made under it.

These are the other articles according to the Royal Decree:

  • Article (2): In order to marry a foreigner in Oman, the marriage must follow the rules of Sharia and not contravene public order laws in the country. Marriage must also be documented under Oman law.
  • Article (3): If a foreign document is used to prove the marriage, it must be verified by both the authorities of the foreign country and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman.
  • Article (4): All previous marriage certificates issued by foreign authorities must also be verified by the Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs and comply with the rules mentioned in Article 2.
  • Article (5): All government agencies must implement this new law in their respective areas.
  • Article (6): All regulations that contradict this new law are no longer valid.
  • Article (7): The new law will be published in the Official Gazette and will come into force on the day of its publication.

Many Omanis welcomed the move which will ease the marriage process for those currently facing difficulties.

Previously, Oman also allowed its citizens to marry Gulf Council Cooperation (GCC) citizens without asking for permission.
