Dutch news site Bovenniewus reported that police have described the suspect in Oort’s death, Thomas R., as a “jealous Tinder dater”. According to the news site, he was arrested in Germany after fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
According to the WCVB, Dutch authorities said two men, aged 25 and 30, were injured in the attack that killed Oort. Details of how they were injured were not immediately available. Police say the suspect started a fire at Oort’s home. The other two victims were roommates from Oort, according to Boevenniewus.
The Dutch news site reports that the suspect first threw an incendiary device at the building and started a fire. The police suspect started the fire to lure residents of the building outside, according to Boevenniewus. He then attacked Oort and his roommates in a stairwell, police said.
Oort was then stabbed with a sharp object; the researchers told the news site.
According to Boevenniewus, Thomas R. worked as a service technician and lived with his parents and sister. He lives in Leek, about 160 km from Amsterdam. Further information, including his full name, was not immediately available.

Oort’s sister told WCVB her killer followed her after they met on dating app Tinder. He tracked her location with a GPS device on his bike, Danique Oort told the news channel.
“He put a tracker on his bike because you cycle everywhere in the Netherlands,” Danique Oort told WCVB. “Right now we’re just trying to process this whole situation and really say goodbye and take precautions that we need to take.”
Oort’s ex-boyfriend, identified only as Michael, also a 21-year-old American studying in the Netherlands, told Hart Van Nederland they remained friends after their split and considered trying to date again, leading the murder suspect “I didn’t see it coming,” Michael told the news site. “I went straight there to see if it was really about her … apparently it was.”

Mieke Oort’s Education
According to her Facebook page, Mieke Oort graduated from Winchester High School in 2019. After that, according to her family, she began her studies at the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.
Oort’s sister told WCVB that her family had traveled to the Netherlands to get more information about the case. “He had the most beautiful soul,” Danique Oort told the Boston Globe.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, Oort graduated from NHL Stenden in 2024 with a degree in Recreation and Events Management.
