State and federal authorities are set to meet with local officials next week to develop a plan to advance an investigation into a woman’s claims that her late father was a ruthless serial killer. He went undetected by authorities in a quiet western Iowa town.

According to WHO-TV, authorities are weighing their options, including excavation of the property in Thurman, Iowa, where Lucy Studey claims she and her siblings helped her father, Donald Dean Studey, who died in 2013 at the age of 75 from 50 to 70 bodies dispose of during a decades-long massacre.
“We’ve been hearing about this for years,” Fremont County Deputy Sheriff Tim Bothwell told the station on Wednesday.
“She (Lucy) told us in 2007 and we walked out and there was only one well on the property that we could see, we didn’t know it was on other people’s property.”
Lucy claimed that her father primarily targeted sex workers in the Omaha, Nebraska area, killing “five or six” women each year before dumping their bodies in a 90-foot-deep well on his Iowa property.
During a search on Friday, two body-sensing dogs detected the smell of human remains in four spots on the property, reviving law enforcement investigations into Lucy’s claims.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations will coordinate with Fremont County officials on how to proceed with potential outside agency funds and resources.
“The initial excavation of the area cost just over $300,000,” Bothwell told the outlet.
“And for a county with a $1.8 million law enforcement budget, that would wipe out our budget.”

Investigators will conduct further investigations and consider Lucy’s allegations before they begin, DCI Assistant Director Mitch Mortvedt told CNN.
And because Donald died nearly a decade ago, Mortvedt said police will take time to investigate. He believes it will “take months for a plan to develop” as the investigation into Lucy’s claims is still in an “early stage,” the outlet reports.
Efforts to reach Lucy Thursday were unsuccessful, and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office’s PEOPLE request for comment was not immediately answered.
