Brazilian singer Gal Costa, whose crystal-clear voice and transgressive sensuality made her the face of the revolutionary “Tropicalia” movement in the 1960s, died on Wednesday, according to her PR agency.

ICONIC Brazilian pop artist Gal Costa has died at the age of 77 just days after postponing her Primavera Sound performance due to surgery.
With his mane of auburn curls and seductive smile, Costa sang with some of the biggest names on Brazil’s burgeoning pop music scene in the 1960s, immortalizing many of their songs, including Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, and his close friend Caetano Veloso.
“Unfortunately, we confirm” Costa’s death, a spokeswoman for Costa’s public relations firm told AFP, without being able to elaborate.
Costa, who lives in Sao Paulo, recently canceled a concert at the Primavera Sound music festival there on the advice of doctors after he underwent surgery to remove a lump from his right nasal cavity in September, according to Brazilian media reports.
However, he was expected to return to the stage and his website listed his next performance as a concert in Sao Paulo on December 17th.
The news of his death caused a surge of emotion in Brazil, even among some of music’s biggest names.
“I am very saddened and shocked by the death of my ‘sister’ @GalCosta,” tweeted famed singer-songwriter and former Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil.

Brazil’s President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva posted a photo on Instagram of him kissing Costa.
She is “one of the best singers in the world, one of our most important artists, who brought the name and sounds of Brazil to the whole planet,” he wrote.
“The country… lost one of its great voices today.”
Costa is survived by her 16-year-old adopted son, her agency said.
