Investigators have found what they say is Gabby Petito, last heard late last month while touring the country with her boyfriend.
Wyoming’s Chief Resident FBI Agent Charles Jones offered his condolences to Gabby’s family.
He said formal identification and cause of death will be determined later, but the body found matches the description of 22-year-old Petito.
The autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
Gabby Petito’s Disappearance & Body Found in Wyoming
Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie, 23, began their journey in July in a custom Ford Transit van.
Petito stayed in touch with her family for weeks and often posted about the trip on her Instagram account. But contact ended abruptly on 25th August, and Laundrie returned to his home in North Point, Florida, on 1st September, with the truck but without Gabby.
However, Laundrie did not tell Gabby’s family that he had returned. They found out that he returned ten days later and quickly filed a missing person report for Gabby.
Laundrie and his family have refused to respond to repeated calls from her family to provide information on her whereabouts or to speak to the police.
North Point police did not request a search warrant to collect information about the disappearance and said they had no evidence of a crime. Then, almost a week after Gabby’s disappearance, Laundrie’s parents asked the police to come to her home.
Instead of talking about Gabby, the laundries filed a missing person report for her son, who had left the house three days earlier and has not heard from him since.
When the FBI, valet investigators, sheriff’s deputies, and police began an intensive search in the area of Grand Teton National Park where Gabby was the last met, North Point police began excavating a nature preserve. 25,000 acres flooded for laundry.
A woman who was in the park with her husband said she saw the truck on 25th August.
A Utah business owner said the couple had been at her store for 15 to 20 minutes that day or the next.
Another couple traveling through the area posted a video of a truck that looked a lot like Petito and Laundrie’s truck.
This video was filmed on 27th August despite the fact that the couple did not see anyone near the truck.
A TikTok user said that he briefly hitchhiked on Brian Laundrie on 29th August.
What Police Have Investigated Up Till Now?
After the body was discovered, the Joneses said the Spread Creek camp would be “closed until further notice.”
He also asked the public to “respect the privacy of Gabby’s family.”
“It’s an incredibly difficult time for them,” she said, “and our thoughts are with them as they mourn their daughter.”
Laundrie’s family was not immediately heard, but North Point police released a statement saying they were “saddened and heartbroken to learn that Gabby had been found dead.”
“Our goal from the beginning was to work with the FBI and domestic partners to bring them home,” the statement said.
“We will continue to work with the FBI to find more answers.”
