Former President Pervez Musharraf Dies in Dubai

Retired former President General Pervez Musharraf died Sunday at the age of 79 after a long illness.

The former president was being treated at the American Hospital in Dubai for amyloidosis, a rare disease.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif offered his condolences and deepest condolences to the former President’s family.

“Pray for the forgiveness of the deceased and the patience of the family,” the prime minister said in a statement from the prime minister’s office.

In a statement, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza and all heads of services offer their deepest condolences.

“May Allah bless the soul of the deceased and give strength to the grieving family,” the ISPR said.

Musharraf was born on August 11, 1943, in Delhi, British India. On April 19, 1961, he received his commission from the Pakistan Kakul Military Academy. He also took part in the 1965 and 1971 wars.

He was promoted to the rank of general in 1998 and assumed the position of Chief of the Army General Staff (COAS), a position he held until 2007. On October 12, 1999, he seized power in a military coup. He was elected president in a referendum in 2002 and remained in office until 2008.
