Dubai Will Use AI For Air Traffic Control At Airports

Known for being at the forefront of technological advances, Dubai is now planning to roll out AI-powered air traffic control systems at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).

According to National, Swedish aerospace company Saab has developed technology that combines radar and flight data. According to David Shomar, Saab’s vice president of civil security in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the technology will be operational in about a year.

The AI-powered air traffic control system will help reduce employee workloads and further improve safety measures, as the air traffic controller will only monitor one screen instead of several.

In addition, AI will also help prepare for possible incidents and manage the flow of traffic in terminals, David said at the Airport Show 2023 to be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Saab’s technology provides a detailed view of airport assets, including the location of police, fire engines, ambulances and border control equipment. In the event of an incident, the system quickly locates the nearest resources and dispatches them to the affected area.

In addition, it will monitor the airport’s airside and send alerts when more immigration and customs personnel are needed to handle delayed flights.

In the first quarter (Q1) of 2023, DXB received 21.2 million passengers, an increase of 55.8% compared to the same period last year. This number also reflects the 95.6% of passenger traffic at the airport before the pandemic.
