Dates For The New School Year in The UAE Announced
Summer holidays are underway in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but students, parents, and teachers are eagerly awaiting the first day of the new school year in August 2023, National News reported.
On July 7, many schools across the country closed for extended summer vacations.
For many schools, such as those following the UK and US educational model, the new 2023/24 school year begins at the end of August.
However, for those on the Indian curriculum, the school year begins in April, leaving the summer holidays in the 2023/24 school year as a mid-year break.
The school year in the United Arab Emirates is divided into three semesters with winter, spring, and summer holidays for both public and private schools. According to the government mandate, the academic year must be at least 182 days long.
After a break of around seven weeks, students, parents, and teachers are preparing for the start of the school year on Monday, August 28th.
The semester lasts more than three months, followed by a winter break in December and a spring break in March. Additional holidays are observed throughout the year for important public occasions such as Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr, and Eid Al-Adha.
The schedule for the upcoming school year for schools starting in August is as follows:
- The first quarter runs from Monday, August 28th to Friday, December 8th.
- The winter holidays last from Monday 11 December 2023 to Monday 1 January 2024, which is a public holiday.
- The second quarter runs from Tuesday, January 2nd to Friday, March 22nd.
- Spring break runs from Monday, March 25th to April 14th.
- The final quarter begins on Monday, April 15th and the academic year cannot end before June 28th.
Although the dates of the final trimesters may vary somewhat from school to school, the period of at least 182 school days remains constant.
For the Indian curriculum schools that started the first semester of 2023-24 in April, the school year calendar is quite similar. They will return from summer vacation on the same day, August 28, and will also have winter vacation in December. Your school year ends in March 2024.
According to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the regulator of private schools in Dubai, schools in India can close at any time in March provided they have completed the required 182 school days.
