Who is Daniel Greene?

Initially presenting the image of a regular, unassuming individual, Daniel Greene was married to Jennifer Greene, and together they had two children. For over 15 years, Greene served as a firefighter in Prince George’s County, Maryland, until he departed from the service in 2013.

However, beneath this seemingly ordinary exterior, Greene harbored a string of secrets. One such secret was his alleged extramarital affair with a woman named Jennifer McKay.

Despite knowing McKay since elementary school, Greene rekindled their relationship around 2012, concealing his marital status from her.

McKay later claimed that Greene went to great lengths to fabricate divorce and custody papers, utilized a corporate credit card for her expenses, and even rented and staged a separate residence to maintain the facade of a bachelor.

When away from McKay, Greene purportedly fabricated excuses such as business trips or time spent with his children. Their relationship ultimately ended in early 2017.

According to the state’s allegations, Greene fatally shot Jon Hickey while he slept in his Baltimore apartment. With the murder weapon never recovered, the case relied entirely on circumstantial evidence.

Prosecutors presented witnesses and various forms of evidence, including photographs and video footage from the crime scene, during the trial.

The emotional toll was evident, particularly on Kim Hickey, Jon’s mother, who described her son as an exceptional individual willing to help anyone in need.

Following a week-long trial, closing statements were delivered on Thursday, June 22, 2023. Prosecutor Rita Wistoff-Ito asserted the case for first-degree murder, emphasizing premeditation.

Conversely, the defense maintained the state’s lack of substantial evidence, highlighting the absence of the murder weapon.

Jury deliberations commenced on Friday, June 23, 2023. After a brief period, the jury returned with a verdict of guilty on all charges against Daniel Greene in connection with Jon Hickey’s murder.

Originally scheduled for September 11, 2023, Greene’s sentencing was postponed due to last-minute motions. Further delays pushed the sentencing date to February 15, 2024, where Greene received a life sentence plus an additional 20 years, encompassing charges of first-degree murder, home invasion, and firearm use in a felony violent crime.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Greene now serves his sentence under Maryland’s Department of Corrections at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland, as of March 1, 2024.
