A man driving a truck fell and killed four members of a Muslim family in the southern Canadian province of Ontario in what police called a “premeditated” attack on Monday.

A 20-year-old suspect wearing a vest “like armor” fled the scene on Sunday night after the attack and was arrested at a mall seven kilometers (4 miles) from the intersection in London, Ontario, Superintendent Paul Waight.

“We believe that this was a premeditated act and that the victims of this terrible incident were the target,” said Police Chief Steve Williams.

We believe the victims were targeted because of their Islamic beliefs.”

The 20-year-old alleged shooter hit five people in the hit-and-run attack, the police said.

“For the Muslim community in London and for Muslims across the country, know that we are with you. Islamophobia does not have a place in any of our communities. That hatred is insidious and despicable and it must stop,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter.
