Abolfazl Adinezadeh, an Iranian schoolboy, died in Mashhad, Iran after being shot dead at close range by state forces during anti-government protests.

He died of liver and kidney damage from birdshot on his death certificate, according to a BBC Persian report. A doctor estimated the distance from which the teenager was shot on October 8 to be less than a meter.

His current age was 17 years.

What Were The Details of An Incident?

Since the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody on September 16, protests have spread across Iran.

On Thursday, lawyers for Amini’s family dismissed the conclusions of an official medical report that the death of the 22-year-old, who was arrested because of her clothing, was not the result of beatings she suffered in police custody.

Authorities have not commented on the teenager’s death in Mashhad. Abolfazl’s father said in an emotional video of the boy’s funeral posted on social media, “What crime had he committed that you sprayed his stomach with 24 bird shots?”

Police Investigation Report

The 17-year-old reportedly joined the October 8 demonstration to protest Amini’s death and corruption. A day after the protest, Abolfazl’s parents were called to collect their son from the police station. When they arrived they found that he was dead.

Iranian security services were present at the teenager’s funeral and some mourners were asked to delete videos of the ceremony from their cell phones. His parents were pressured to claim the boy was a member of the Basij, an Iranian militia, to imply that the protesters had killed him.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Tuesday described a “relentless violent response by the security forces to protesters” and said reports of arbitrary arrests, killings, and detentions of children are “deeply disturbing”.

She said: “Some sources suggest that up to 23 children have been killed and many more injured in at least seven provinces by live ammunition, metal bullets at close range, and fatal blows. Several schools were also raided and security forces arrested children.”
