2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Channels 911 GT3 Into The Most Extreme Alligator Of All Time

The Porsche 718 Cayman delights drivers with the incredible poise and agility of a mid-engined sports car. If anything is missing, it could be the 911 GT3’s naturally aspirated 4.0-liter Boxer 6 engine.

Call it a closed case. On Tuesday, the day before the Los Angeles Auto Show, Porsche introduced the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS with the GT3’s 500bhp six-cylinder boxer engine as a high-revving highlight.

The 4.0-liter boxer engine revs 6 times at 9,000 rpm and generates 493 hp and 331 lb-ft. Torque, an increase of 79 or 14 over the previous 718 Cayman model, the 414 hp GT4.

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS will only come with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (apparently it’s something RS) with shorter gears than the 718 Cayman GT4 version.

This helps with acceleration: the Cayman GT4 RS hits 100 km / h in just 3.2 seconds, half a second faster than the fully equipped Cayman GT4 with its 414 hp. The GT4 RS reaches a top speed of 196 mph, which is 9 mph faster than the GT4.

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS weighs 3,227 pounds, which is 49 pounds lighter than a 718 Cayman GT4. Weight-saving measures include a carbon fiber reinforced plastic hood and front fenders, a lightweight rear window, and lighter door panels with fabric clips for the door handles and storage nets.

Porsche lowered the Cayman GT4 RS 1.2 inches over the standard Cayman in a revised chassis with unique ball joints and stiffer springs, shocks, and stabilizers.

The 20-inch wheels are forged aluminum and, for the first time on a Cayman, feature central locking.

The exterior modifications are mostly functional. These include additional air intakes behind the side windows, revised air intakes in the rear side panels that direct more air, and a fixed rear spoiler with gooseneck mounts.

The fender is from the Porsche 911 RSR race car and will also appear on the 2022 911 GT3.

Other aerodynamic details are an adjustable front diffuser, rear diffuser, front-wheel openings, aerodynamic underside, and spoiler lip ribbed front. These elements, combined with lower ground clearance, give the GT4 RS 25% more aerodynamic downforce in performance mode compared to the Cayman GT4.

But wait, there is more. Buyers can get an optional Weissach package that uses carbon fiber for the tailgate, processes air intakes, cooling air intakes, airbox cover, mirror caps, and the rear spoiler.

It also includes titanium tailpipes inspired by the Porsche 935/19 race car, a synthetic suede upper dashboard, and a large Porsche logo on the rear window. In addition, buyers of the Weissach package can spend more on magnesium tires.

Porsche demonstrated the capabilities of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
