Will Pakistan Studies Be Removed from University Syllabi by HEC?

The Caretaker Federal Minister for Information, Murtaza Solangi, has clarified recent claims suggesting the removal of Pakistan Studies from university degree programs by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

Solangi refuted these claims in response to a motion raised by Senator Mushtaq Ghani, emphasizing that neither the ministry nor the HEC has proposed or implemented any decisions to abolish Pakistan Studies or any other course at the undergraduate level.

Solangi highlighted the autonomy of universities within their legal frameworks and assured that all undergraduate policies recommended by the HEC meet essential standards. He stated that universities have the independence to shape their curricula by their laws.

Regarding concerns about the curriculum, Solangi mentioned the incorporation of a comprehensive course covering Pakistan’s ideology and constitution across undergraduate degree programs.

This course amalgamates elements from Pakistan Studies and the Constitution to ensure students gain a holistic understanding of the nation’s principles.

Additionally, Solangi disclosed ongoing discussions within the HEC to introduce a mandatory two-credit-hour course for all undergraduate programs. These consultations involve relevant stakeholders and aim to enhance the educational experience for students across disciplines.
