Tom Hardy winced in front of Armie Hammer at the Mad Max auditions

Tom Hardy and Armie Hammer had an “intense” battle for the role in Mad Max: Fury Road, journalist Kyle Buchanan reported.

In a recently released book, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, Buchanan spilled the fuse during the star’s two auditions for the film.

“Towards the end of the trial, Hardy became a favorite alongside Jeremy Renner and Armie Hammer,” reported the New York Times columnist.

“Hardy and Hammer even read together as part of their audition, and when Hardy winced and spat at his stage partner, Hammer told Miller that Hardy had to be more Max than he was,” he added.

Todd Matthew Grossman, who operated the audition camera, told the columnist, “Jeremy and Armie were equally wonderful, but there was something about Tom in the room that made him feel like Max for sure.”

“It had that kind of suppressed emotional dryness you’d find in a post-apocalypse and, buried beneath it, a contempt for the world. There was this intensity that burned through the lens,” the book revealed, via an excerpt from Vulture.
