Barbados will become a republic next month and sever colonial ties with the British monarchy.

Sandra Mason becomes the first woman president of the new Republic of Barbados.

“It is time to leave our colonial past completely behind,” the Caribbean country’s government said last month.

The aim was to complete the process in time for the 55th anniversary of British independence in November 2021.
