Sharjah Issues New Ramadan Rules and Guidelines For Eateries

Sharjah Municipality has announced rules for restaurants during Ramadan. Its purpose is to regulate the operation and presentation of food during Lent.

Restaurants must obtain permits to operate during Lent. They are divided into 2 categories. The first permit is for daytime food display and operations and costs AED 3,000.

The second permission is to display food before Iftar. It can be purchased for AED 500. Restaurant owners can apply for permits at the Food Control Section Counter, Department of Suburban Affairs, and Industrial Zone 5.

These permits only apply to food served outside the restaurant premises. Customers are not allowed in the dining areas and food preparation is only permitted in the kitchens. In order to obtain these permits, certain conditions must be met.

Here is the list of requirements:

  • The display of food outside the premises on the sidewalks is permitted. The location should not be sandy.
  • Food must be presented in a glass box and in a stainless steel container.
  • Food should be covered with aluminum foil or food grade plastic wrap.
  • The packaging must be made of food-grade material.
  • Food should be kept at ideal temperatures, but not refrigerated or frozen.
  • Food must be prepared by licensees.
