Saudi Arabia Amends Nationality Law To Offer Citizenship

In a major political turnaround, Saudi Arabia officially changed its citizenship law. The change now allows certain individuals to obtain citizenship by order of Saudi Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, at the suggestion of the Interior Minister.

This historic decision, published this Friday in the official newspaper Um Al Qura, modifies Article 8 of Saudi Citizenship Law.

This new decision is very different from how things were. Previously, Article 28 of the Implementing Rules to the Saudi Citizenship Law required the Minister of the Interior to authorize the granting of citizenship to individuals based on Article 8 of the law. But now the approval of the Minister of the Interior is no longer necessary.

After publication in the Official Journal, this decision will come into force immediately.

Many people are curious about this decision, particularly the government’s criteria for deciding who gets citizenship. The move is part of Saudi Arabia’s strategy to attract foreigners and investment. The government hopes this will help diversify the economy by making it less dependent on oil.

Ultimately, this decision will benefit both Saudi society and its economy. Initiatives like these will be instrumental in influencing the country’s future direction in its development and modernization.
