Sahir Shamshad Mirza Appointed As New CJCSC of Pakistan

The government on Thursday ended the persistent rumors by revealing that Lt. Gen. Asim Munir had been chosen by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to succeed General Qamar Javed Bajwa as head of the Pakistan Army.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb tweeted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also appointed Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, using his constitutional authority to do so (CJCSC).

After receiving permission from the associated parties to select the officials for the senior posts, Prime Minister Shehbaz convened a federal cabinet meeting to discuss the senior appointments.

Sources say the federal government has confirmed Prime Minister Shehbaz’s election as army chief under the Pakistan Army Act later this month, despite his imminent resignation.

Lt. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza’s Career

Lieutenant General Munir, who served as Pakistan’s spy chief and COAS, will succeed General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who will step down at the end of this month after six years as COAS.

Lieutenant General Mirza is the most experienced candidate of the four from the same group in the current cohort. He is from the Sindh Regiment, which is also where General Nadeem Raza, the outgoing CJCSC, is from. He has a distinguished military career, particularly in the last seven years in senior positions.

During the final two years of General Raheel Sharif’s government, Lt. Gen. Mirza rose to become Director-General for Military Operations (DGMO). He served as a core team member at GHQ under General Sharif, who oversaw the military campaign against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other terrorists in North Waziristan.

In addition, he played a key role in the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG), which brokered talks between Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, and the United States.

Upon his promotion to the three-star level, he was appointed Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, effectively making him the Army second-in-command behind COAS. In this capacity, he was actively involved in important decisions affecting both foreign policy and national security.

In 2021, he also participated in strategic talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi along with former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
