Residential Building Collapse in Mumbai Kills 11 Including 8 Children Amid First Monsoon Flooding

After heavy rains in the west Indian city of Mumbai, a residential building collapsed, killing at least eleven people including 8 children, and injuring seven others, the police said on Thursday.

First Heavy monsoon rains flooded several parts of the city, the financial and entertainment capital of India, on Wednesday. The three-story building collapsed Wednesday night, and police officer Ravindra Kadam said a dozen rescuers were clearing the rubble to find residents who may still be trapped.

New Delhi TV station said the building collapsed on top of another building in a slum in Mumbai’s Malad West neighborhood.

Local residents joined fire brigades and police to rescue people and took the seven injured to a hospital on the outskirts of Kandivali.

Mumbai recorded 222 millimeters of rain in 12 hours on Wednesday.

Tidal waves that reached up to 4.6 meters (13 feet) prevented rain from draining and flooded roads, railways, and neighborhoods.

During the monsoon season from June to September, buildings collapse in India when heavy rains weaken the foundations of poorly built structures.

In 2019, a three-story building collapsed in a hilly area of ​​the north Indian city of Solan after heavy rainfall, killing 14 people.

In the same year, a four-story building collapsed in Mumbai, killing 10 people.
