No New Universities Are Established in Pakistan, Says Federal Education Minister

Federal Education Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain has banned the Higher Education Commission (HEC) from awarding NOCs to new universities to improve the quality of existing universities.

In an official letter to HEC President Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, the minister called for a crackdown on any universities that were established without receiving a NOC from HEC.

The minister also recommended that the HEC President launch a broad campaign in print and electronic media on universities operating without NOCs.

The development comes days after the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Education unanimously suggested that HECs should ensure no universities are established without obtaining a NOC.

The minister also pointed out that higher education is the core of knowledge. It is the foundation of a platform that greatly contributes to economic growth and development by fostering innovation and enhancing skills.
