The four-time Grand Slam champion had previously said she would not compete against the press during the French Open for mental health reasons.

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka has announced that she will be stepping down from Roland Garros after the bitter consequences of her decision to boycott all media activities.

On Sunday, the former world number 1 was warned that she could be expelled from Roland Garros if she continued to boycott post-game press conferences during the tournament.

“The best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I am retiring so that everyone can concentrate on tennis in Paris,” wrote the world number two on Twitter on Monday.

The Grand Slam organizers fined him $15,000 for failing to attend a press conference after winning the first round.

Earlier this week, the four-time Grand Slam champion said she would not compete against the press during the French Open, citing psychological reasons.

“I often feel that people don’t consider athletes’ mental health and that sounds very right every time I see a press conference or attend a conference,” he said last week. In his Twitter post on Monday, he said he has “suffered from prolonged depression since the 2018 US Open and I am having trouble coping with it”.
