Transitioning to a three-star ranking general, he took on the role of Commander of Corps V in Karachi from December 2020 to October 2021.
Director-General of ISI
In October 2021, the Prime Minister’s Office officially announced the appointment of Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum as the Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). His appointment marked the end of Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed’s tenure, and he assumed office in November 2021.
This appointment generated significant debate and controversy, as then-Prime Minister Imran Khan’s reluctance to confirm Nadeem Anjum’s appointment strained civil-military relations. The appointment of the ISI chief is not explicitly defined in the Constitution or Army Act but is traditionally considered the prerogative of the Prime Minister.
At the outset of October 2021, Prime Minister Imran Khan received three names from the Chief of Army Staff for the appointment of a new ISI chief. Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum’s nomination had already been approved following an announcement by the DG ISPR. However, the Prime Minister’s secretariat did not issue a formal notification until October 26, 2021.
Prime Minister Imran Khan subsequently announced his intention to consult on this crucial assignment. While Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry denied reports of the Prime Minister wanting to interview candidates for the DG ISI position, he emphasized that the appropriate procedures would be followed.
This led to a three-week deadlock over the appointment of the spymaster, eventually resolved through dialogue between civil and military leadership.
In December 2021, DG ISI Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum directed authorities not to release any pictures or video footage from official meetings to the media.
Press Conference of October 2022
In a highly unprecedented development, DG ISI Nadeem Anjum appeared at a press conference alongside DG ISPR Babar Iftikhar at the ISPR’s Rawalpindi office, addressing several journalists. This marked the first instance of the ISI head giving a live briefing to the media, covering a range of pressing issues at the time, including “Lettergate,” Arshad Sharif’s death, the failed assassination attempt on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the military’s support for Shahbaz Sharif amid allegations of General Bajwa’s involvement in Imran Khan’s ouster, and Khan’s Azadi March in 2022.
Concerning the “Lettergate” controversy, Anjum clarified that during the National Security Committee meeting, he had “categorically clarified” that no evidence of a foreign conspiracy to overthrow the PTI-led government had been found. However, the cypher in question was deemed authentic during the National Security Council meeting, leading to a strong demarche being issued to the Acting US envoy in Islamabad, jointly agreed upon by civil and military leadership as blatant interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs.
Retirement Date And Extension
In September 2023, Nadeem Anjum’s tenure as ISI chief was extended for one year, making him the third ISI chief to receive such an extension after Akhtar Abdur Rehman and Shuja Pasha.
