Mike Fanning, a former Notre Dame All-American defensive tackle who served 10 seasons in the NFL, died Sunday.
Fanning was part of the 1973 Fighting Irish champion team that defeated Alabama 11-0 in the Sugar Bowl. Although the team did not repeat as champions in 1974, Fanning was named a second-team All-American and selected by the Rams in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Former NFL Veteran Career
In 1975, Fanning was named to the All-Rookie Team as the Rams qualified for the NFC title game.
Fanning had eight sacks for the 1979 team, which won the NFC Championship and reached Super Bowl XIV before losing to the Steelers.
Fanning was part of an intimidating line of defense that included Jack Youngblood, Fred Dryer, and Larry Brooks.
Youngblood, who spent his entire 14-year career with the Rams and is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, paid tribute to Fanning on Twitter.
“Mike was my wingman in Battle, God bless you, bro!”
Fanning spent eight seasons with the Rams and one season with the Lions and Seahawks before retiring.
Since 2009, Fanning has worked at the University of Tulsa Athletics Department, first with group tickets and then as one-time operations and administrative assistant.
“We are saddened by the news of Mike’s death,” said Vice President and Athletic Director Rick Dickson.
“He was a great football player at Notre Dame and in the NFL, and he brought that competitiveness and work ethic to everyday life. He was such a nice person who worked to make TU Athletics a success.”
A son and two daughters survive Fanning. His cause of death was not disclosed.
